50% recycled content for M&S mac

Retail giant Marks & Spencer today (9 April) unveiled a pack away mac made from 50% recycled polyester, sourced from used plastic bottles.

A spokeswoman for the retailer said that “The pack away mac has been designed a part of our Plan A 2025 sustainability plan, in which we are committed to at least 25% of our clothing and home products being made with reused or recycled materials by 2025.

Available in womenswear, menswear and kidswear, M&S said: “This seasonal saviour is a must have transitional piece for every wardrobe. The lightweight mac with StormwearTM technology, comes in a variety of colours and prints and packs away conveniently until needed.

The company launched its Plan A programme 10 years ago and considers that it has since helped redefine the role of business in society. The retailer said: “Plan A has delivered 296 stretching eco and ethical commitments, won 240 awards and saved over £750 million in costs through efficiencies such as using less energy, fewer transport miles and reducing packaging. A decade of achievements includes:

  • Over 27 million items of clothing Shwopped (since 2008);
  • One billion coat hangers saved;
  • Making M&S the world’s first and only carbon neutral major retailer;
  • Sourcing 49% of M&S cotton and 27% of M&S leather from more sustainable sources;
  • 890,000 people in the M&S supply chain benefited from training on subjects such as employee rights, health care, numeracy and literacy.

Plan A 2025, said M&S, is an ambitious eco and ethical customer focused plan that builds on the success of the first 10 years of Plan A and will support 1,000 communities, help 10 million people live happier, healthier lives and convert M&S into a zero-waste business.

The company noted: “The three-pillar plan is designed to tackle the big issues facing retailers, consumer businesses and society today. It spans customer and colleague wellbeing, transforming lives and communities and caring for the planet. Each pillar includes pioneering new commitments, clothing example include that by 2020, 100% of M&S products will have at least one Plan A attribute and by 2025 every product will have attributes which address all priority social, ethical and environmental impacts.”
